Create a public key in the dashboard, tick the tools you need, paste the snippets on your site. Your real API key stays on our servers — the public key is meaningless without the matching Origin.
Three Homedata surfaces, three different jobs. Most property platforms end up using a mix.
| Surface | Audience | Auth | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Widgets | Developers / property sites | Public key + origin lock | Render UK property data on your own customer-facing pages without backend code. |
| Free tools | Consumers | None — public | Look up a single property without signing up. Drives SEO traffic. |
| REST API | Developers (server-side) | API key (server-to-server) | Backend systems, bulk processing, AI agents. Full data surface. |
| MCP server | AI agents (Claude, Cursor, etc.) | API key via MCP config | Plug UK property data into AI coding tools and assistants. |
A drop-in widget is a single script tag plus a div that renders Homedata UK property data inside any website. The data comes from Homedata's API but the customer's real API key is never exposed in the browser — a scoped public key is used instead, bound to specific domains and tools.
The free tools are consumer-facing pages on homedata.co.uk where anyone can look up a property without signing up. The widgets are developer-facing embeds that put the same data on a customer's own website — for example, an estate agent showing flood risk and EPC on every property listing.
The REST API is server-to-server with an API key. Widgets are browser-side and use a public key plus origin lock. Both hit the same underlying data; widgets are the recommended path when you want to display data inside a webpage without writing backend code to proxy the API.
Yes — widgets require a public key, which is created from the Homedata developer dashboard after signing up. The free tier is 100 calls per month with no credit card required. The script bundle and widget code itself are free to use.
