Estate agents and rental portals

Surface crime stats on every listing — pre-empts the most common buyer enquiry and demonstrates transparency. The ranked bars are visually distinctive at the bottom of a property card.

Relocation services

Help clients compare neighbourhoods at a glance. The crime widget on a comparison view shows the difference between postcodes in concrete numbers.

Build-to-rent and student housing

Risk-aware buyers and tenants want to see crime stats up front. Display them with the brand-locked widget on every scheme page.

How the data works

All counts come from data.police.uk, the official Home Office publication of street-level crime reported by UK territorial police forces. Updated monthly with a typical 2-month lag (March data lands in May).

Categories

Crimes are bucketed into Home Office categories: anti-social behaviour, theft from the person, violence and sexual offences, burglary, vehicle crime, drugs, criminal damage and arson, and others. The widget ranks them by count and shows the top N (configurable, default 5).

Search radius

Approximately 1km from the postcode centroid — the same radius used by data.police.uk's own postcode lookup. Counts reflect all crimes reported within that radius for the latest published month.

Coverage: England, Wales, Northern Ireland. Scotland uses a separate publication via Police Scotland which is not currently in the dataset.

Frequently asked

What crime data does the widget show?

Total crime count for the most recent month plus a ranked breakdown by Home Office category. Each category is shown as a horizontal bar scaled to the highest count, with the absolute number alongside. Data comes from UK territorial police forces via the Home Office data.police.uk publication.

How recent is the data?

data.police.uk publishes monthly with a typical lag of 2 months. For example, March 2026 data is published mid-May 2026. The widget always shows the most recent published month, with the month label shown under the total.

Is it legal to display street-level crime data on property listings?

Yes. data.police.uk is published under the Open Government Licence v3 and is explicitly intended for public reuse — including on commercial property platforms. Many UK estate agent and rental sites already surface it. The data is anonymised and aggregated, never tied to an individual property or person.
