Agent MCP / Gemini CLI

UK property data in Gemini CLI

Gemini CLI is Google's open-source agent for the terminal, and it runs MCP servers from its settings file. Add Homedata and Gemini can look up UK property records while it works: an EPC rating, a flood check or the sold prices on a street.

~/.gemini/settings.json
→ {
  "mcpServers": {
    "homedata": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "homedata-mcp"],
      "env": { "HOMEDATA_API_KEY": "YOUR_API_KEY" }
    }
  }
}

Restart Gemini CLI after saving, in a folder you have trusted. Run gemini mcp list and homedata shows as Connected.

Ask Gemini CLI

What you can ask once it is connected

Check the EPC rating and flood risk for 63 Harvey Lane, Norwich.

Setup

Connect Homedata to Gemini CLI

  1. Get your API key. Get an API key with your email and copy the key from your dashboard. Top up from £10.
  2. Add the block above to ~/.gemini/settings.json. Put your key in place of YOUR_API_KEY. Gemini CLI reads MCP servers from mcpServers in this file. A project-level .gemini/settings.json also works.
  3. Restart and ask. Restart Gemini CLI after saving, in a folder you have trusted. Run gemini mcp list and homedata shows as Connected.

In practice

How people use Homedata in Gemini CLI

Ask Gemini CLI about an address in England and get the EPC, flood risk and nearby schools back from Homedata, each with its source.

Have Gemini CLI enrich a CSV of addresses with property type, bedrooms and floor area.

Questions

Gemini CLI and Homedata

How do I add an MCP server to Gemini CLI?

Open ~/.gemini/settings.json (create it if it does not exist) and add a homedata entry under mcpServers with command npx, args -y homedata-mcp and your key in HOMEDATA_API_KEY. Or add it in one command: gemini mcp add -s user -e HOMEDATA_API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY homedata npx -- -y homedata-mcp (the -- keeps -y for npx).

Why does gemini mcp list say the server is disabled?

Gemini CLI turns MCP servers off in folders you have not trusted. Trust the folder when Gemini asks, then run gemini mcp list again and homedata shows as Connected.

Does this work in the Gemini app?

This page is for Gemini CLI, which runs MCP servers on your machine. For property questions in ChatGPT with nothing to install, use the hosted Homedata app at homedata.co.uk/chatgpt.

Give Gemini CLI a key.

Then ask Gemini CLI about any home in England and Wales. Pay as you go from £10.
