Frequently asked questions
Who must I tell when I move house in the UK?
HMRC, the DVLA if you drive or own a vehicle, your local council at both ends, your bank, your employer, your GP and dentist, the Electoral Register, Royal Mail (for redirection), and your utility, broadband and insurance providers. The full list depends on your circumstances.
Is the Royal Mail redirection worth it?
Yes. It catches the long tail of organisations you forget — old subscriptions, infrequent suppliers, and one-off correspondence. Six or twelve months is the sweet spot.
How quickly do I need to tell the DVLA?
You must update your driving licence and V5C log book as soon as you move. There is a £1,000 fine for failing to update the V5C. Both updates are free and can be done online.
Do I need to tell HMRC?
Yes — through your Personal Tax Account. HMRC then updates your records for income tax, tax credits, Child Benefit and the State Pension automatically.
